YouTube Direct:  The Brief

To break through the clutter and help this large Western ski resort become a house hold name, Appdrenaline was charged with creating an online promotion.  The biggest mogul was how to do this without the clunky element of people having to upload their YouTube videos first to the You Tube interface and then copy and paste their embed codes into the client's site.  Appdrenaline web development and marketing team felt that this process would significantly cut down on the amount of entries and the viral nature of the program.

Supported by a heavy print campaign, the promotion prize was black diamond all the way: four mouths of an all expenses paid skiing vacation at this five star resort plus salary in exchange for blogging daily about their adventures:  without a doubt, a skier's dream.  The Appdrenaline web development team was tasked with  creating a website that would allow contestants to submit their videos compatible with variety of devices and platforms. Unfortunately, we were excluded from entering the promotion.

The Idea

Contestants submitted a 2-3 minute video on how they spent their time on a mountain-- whether it be skiing, snowboarding, hang gliding, or hot tubbing (NOT). Each entrant would need to upload their video and then share the video with their friends to increase both viewing and voting.  Appdrenaline did not want to replicate the typical YouTube promotion which relies on a user submitting a video to their own channel and then posting the YouTube embed code to a website. While the upside of this solution is simple development, the downside is that the brand has no control over the posts.  By using YouTube Direct, along with custom written admin screens, Appdrenaline enabled the ski resort to have complete control over videos entries (to hide or approve) prior to public broadcast.  The added benefit was creating a seamless integration for the contest entrants.

The Result

We developed a rich, immersive contest that became a viral hit.  This contest was a wildly successful video promotion that garnered over 10,000 visits per day and over 125,000 entires.  The results were mind blowing:  a 20% increase in sales for 4Q 2010.
